Formal Storm Sewer Completion a Success

The new storm sewer system is working really well. When we had the first big rain event in July 2016, staff were so excited to see the water draining off Railway Avenue ditch so quickly.  The water usually took 2 – 3 days to subside then 3 weeks to dry enough so we could mow, it was gone overnight!

The new storm sewer system for the north side of the Village is another example of how Marwayne works with different levels of government to address our infrastructure deficits. We were excited to be one of the 56 projects that received the federal Small Communities Fund (SCF) grant for $2+ million. From when the south storm sewer system (Center Street Revitalization) had been put in, Alberta Environment had required a big study detailing the volume of water flowing through Marwayne.  Alberta Transportation (AT) then took our information, did a study of their own in 2015 and shared the recommendations with us. Then when our Village engineer was doing the survey work for N 1stStreet, he realized that AT’s plan could be partially implemented to drain the Village problem areas. As funding allows, AT will continue the drainage ditch along the old railway right of way to improve the remaining overland flooding issues.
